To improve upon my first attempt at responding to a space I decided to have a second go at the first composition task. I chose to respond to the same space with vocal melodies that imitate the bird sounds. This time I had two vocalists to represent our surroundings, the birds often have a call and response like chorus. It also allowed us to improvise harmonies
and create a deeper texture than a solo vocalist could achieve. I used Merlin to identify the birds we could hear, the main birds were House Sparrows which I could see hanging around the trees. There were also Magpies and Long-tailed tits that added different layers to the soundscape. Before recording the final version of this composition we spent some time listening to the birds and trying to imitate the random sounding calls. There was not a structure to their calls so we tried to create part of this piece where it was solo vocals, then accompanied by a second further through. This was to attempt to show one bird calling for another and them singing alongside each other when they had found each other. I tried to create this piece with more intention than the first piece, thinking about the structure and melodies we planned to use before finalising our ideas.
