Second Composition - Running Water

Second Composition - Running Water

This is a complete version of my second composition. This brief included looking at the concept of music concrete and use sounds that are not usual musical sounds. I initially made three small snippets when choosing what sounds I would like to use for my composition. These were running water, kitchen sounds, and door noises. I chose to go with the running water because I had an idea on how to structure my piece, as this was something I did not focus on in my previous composition.

My idea for structure was to go between different types of water sources, my initial recordings I sourced from different taps around my house. One of my sounds was very good when I listened back because it slowly changed pitch as the water had been on for a while. I used this throughout my piece and used a MIDI keyboard to change the pitch and length of the sample.

I next chose to use sounds sourced from waterfalls and rivers for my B section. The differing sizes of the water sources changed how loud and strong the sound was. There was less variety of sounds from the waterfalls, however, because my recordings were longer I did not struggle to make the duration feel equal to the rest of the piece. In future I would like to go when there was more or less rainfall, this would change the dynamics of the clips and could further enhance this section of my composition.

For a final section I wanted to use a third type of water sources to build the piece to a climax, so I got some recordings from the beach and intended to use these to finish it. However, the recordings I got were extremely loud and all I could hear was muffled wind despite using wind defence. In future I would go on numerous days and then I would have more options for samples to use, but instead I decided to repeat my A section and end the piece the same way it started.

I am more proud of this piece than I had imagined because initially it was quite a struggle to use Ableton, despite using other DAWs before. I enjoyed gathering the different recordings in different locations and will continue to do this for my final composition, despite being different styles of recordings.
