For this composition I chose to sit in my back garden. This is because there is always background noise; whether this is traffic, bird calls or general man-made noise.
I attempted to follow similar melodic and rhythmic patterns of the birds and noises I could hear outside, similar to a call and response. It was fun to listen closer into noises I may not heard immediately, this includes some fans and machinery from local building work. One thing I struggled with was making the melodies I created sound different and unique. I found myself repeating similar rhythms and starting my melodies on the same note, to further this I would study the soundscape more before choosing to compose my final piece. This would give me more time to listen and interpret certain sounds, I would be able to practice more before and this could allow me to intentionally repeat certain sections. Structure is definitely something else that could help my composing feels more intentional and create a journey for the listener. With more practice I believe my writing could feel more natural from both my perspective and the listener's.
I chose to use different vowel sounds to imitate the different types of calls that you can hear from different birds, however, it would be fascinating to produce a similar piece but with words or phrases. To do this I would find it useful to have a mind-map or some words that I had produced prior to the composing. Exploring the locations and listening before could be used to inspire this kind of writing.
Despite the fact this composition felt difficult and new to me, I can see how this technique could be furthered and develop my compositional techniques.
