This page features information on one of my second year modules in which we learned about professional skills in the music industry. We had numerous local professionals from the music industry do guest lectures where they discussed what is involved in their job role and how they came into the opportunity. Some of these were record producers while others organised events.
One aspect of the module was to organise our own event and provide an opportunity for musicians to perform. We were not allowed to simply host a gig for any one in the group. Instead we were encouraged to find a unique selling point that would offer a unqiue experience. We were guided through this proces but the final outcome was solely dependent on us as a group. We had to create the idea, find performers, advertise the event, liaise with a venue, and more. While I had been involved in simlar projects during my college years, most people in my group were unfamiliar with this process.
The idea we created for our event was to provide an open mic like setting where new or nervous performers could build their confidence in performance, but with a smaller audience in a more intimate venue.
